SAVE THE FISHIES! Water Pollution Survey

There is a website that conduct a water pollution survey last time. I think we can learn something from them on how to caculate the results and the way they had done their survey.

SAVE THE FISHIES! About the key questions

Hey guys, i've got something to add in about the key questions.

1) What are the causes of water pollution?
Pollutants being emitted directly into a water body results in a "point source", such as a pipe from an industrial facility leaking toxics directly into the water. Pollutants being indirectly transported to the water such as run off from fertilizers flowing in to a larger body of water by rain results in a type of polution called "nonpoint source". Another cause of water pollution happens when oil, gasoline and additives gets spilled due to a leak in a major oil tanker. This usually gets a lot of coverage and press due to it's effects on marine animals, local fisherman and coastal businesses. Oils can also seep into the waterways through the groundwater as a result of a leak or small spill.
For additional the causes of water pollution are:

• Chemical and industrial processes that produce waste that is injected into deep groundwater sources

• Sediment build up as a result of clear cutting

• Personal care products and household cleaning products such as bleach, fabric softener, lotion, perfume and hair dye

• Sewage

• Heat from power plants that causes water pollution by killing fish and marine organisms.

• Carbon Dioxide which causes acidification in oceans

SAVE THE FISHIES! Key Questions

Key Questions

1) What are the causes of water pollution?
Improper discharge of wastewater from households and industries such as people littering. Oil spills from ships also cause water pollution.

2) What can the government do?
To solve the problem of chemicals and litters being dumped, local governments need to strictly regulate and enforce laws against it. The health of future generations, the living creatures, and air and waste need to be protected.

3) What are the consequences if this continues?
It can endanger plants and the lives of animals, negative effect on human health and will also have economic loss. People can make to save the planet. If we don't, life on Earth could cease to exist!

4) How can people prevent this from happening?
Oil spills could mainly be prevented if ship captains were a little bit more aware of their surroundings and avoided big objects. People can stop littering and find rubbish bins instead, to throw their litter in. They should also dispose toxic chemicals properly. These problems can be solved by people being more careful, but unfortunately many people don't care about the earth or future generations.

5) What must people learn from this situation?
People should learn and realise that the Earth should be kept clean for health reasons, as well as to help the living things on the Earth, and to avoid water pollution.

6) How much waste is thrown in the seas per year?
80% of plastic waste in the sea originated on land, rather than being thrown overboard from boats. It's too many to count.

7) What are the items usually found in the seas?
Plastic bottles, sweet wrappers, cans and many other unwanted waste are found in the seas. These cause extinction of many species of living things and spoiling their habitat.

8) What can industries do?
Industries can find better ways to dispose their waste off rather than dumping it in our water sources. They can recycle, filter and treat it.

SAVE THE FISHIES! Survey

Survey

I've thought of some here. But we have to think of some more.

1. Do you think Singapore waters are clean? If not, why?

2. Do you take any actions preventing water pollution yourself? If yes, what are they?

3. Do you believe that water pollution is one of the major issues in Singapore?

4. If people didn't help the environment, what do you think will happen?

5. What personal experience do you have with the issue of ocean water pollution?

Veronica: I create the blog and update it. I've came up some survey questions and also think of the key questions.

What more can I do to make this project a success?
Shen Li: I think i can post more information and sources about water pollution.

Shaojie:I think i can find other ways and forms of water pollution.

Rinny:I think i can change the blogskin and continue doing the model.

Veronica: I still need to put in more effort and contribute more ideas. And also to search for more useful research.

What I have learnt from doing this project so far?
